Rich History Leads to Strong Economic Development

Walter G. and Alethea H. Tolleson founded Tolleson in 1912. It was considered the hub of the west end of the Salt River Valley. In order to entice buyers into using the viable farming land, he chartered a train, gave out free lunches, and gave five dollar gold pieces to people holding lucky numbers. That strategy seemed to work! In the 1930’s, Tolleson struggled through the Great Depression, but in the 40’s, Agriculture aided in economic recovery of the city.

In the 50’s, Tolleson became known as the “Vegetable Center of the World”. In the 60’s, more machinery improved shipping technique and reduced vegetable acreage, which led to a decrease in agricultural business. In the 70’s, a master plan was developed to encourage housing projects, beautification, and a new sewage plant to accommodate growth of residents and industry.
